The head coach will take his side to Fir Park to face Motherwell on the opening day in what will be his first league match in charge of the club having been appointed at the start of this month.
Speaking to RangersTV to react to the games that lie ahead for the Light Blues, he said: “It is exciting, we have just put it on the fixtures board and it gives you something to really look forward to now and to work towards, I am looking forward to it.
“We are going to try and be the team we want to be all the time and it is exciting.
“It is against an old teammate of mine in and [Matt] Gill's in Jens, so we played together at Norwich many moons ago and we have stayed in touch.
“We know him and his character and his personality and how he will have his team ready so it will be tough, but they are all tough and we need to focus on ourselves and what we are going to be in the next four to five weeks.
The former defender for the Gers have outlined his plans for the pre-season schedule for his players, sharing what he expects from his team when he meets the first batch of players for the first time this coming Monday.
He continued: “What do I want to see in pre-season? A willingness to run, a willingness to work and to learn and just be open to the ideas that we are going to bring.
“Ultimately, it is just about attitude and desire and the first couple of weeks of pre-season we are going to put a lot of work into them physically.
“They are going to have to work really hard to be ready because this team and this club and the demands of it mean we are going to have to run more than anyone else.
“Some will return the following Monday because they need a bit of a longer break otherwise they just don't have one.
“We have a big group on Monday and it gives a chance for a few young guys to come and train with us as well, so three or four of them will come up and train with us and it gives them a chance to impress and show what they can do.
“That is always exciting I think in pre-season someone always surprises you, so it gives them an opportunity until the rest of the guys come back and hopefully have one or two faces in the next week or two as well.
“I am expecting that to happen I think we all are so we are looking forward to it.”
Rangers also learned their UEFA Champions League second round qualifying fate earlier in the week as they take on Greek side Panathinaikos in late July, with the former Scotland international confident his team will be ready for the test that awaits in what will be his first competitive match in charge.
He added: “UCL draw? It is exciting, a lot of people have said to me maybe it is the toughest draw we could have had but we have to play against good teams and beat good teams if we are going to compete in European football.
“I think the squad will look different; we will have some players in by then as well.
“The earlier we can go, the better, so they get ingrained in what we are trying to build.
“Culturally and in terms of performance, but I am looking forward to it.
“We haven't even started with the players yet so they are back in on Monday, that is the most exciting bit, and then we'll see what the players can do, how we are going to have to adapt and tweak to make it really built in and ready for us, then the rest will take care of itself.”
