Rydnn McGuire On Working With Butland and Kelly

RYDNN McGuire says his penalty shootout heroics in last night's Old Firm Glasgow Cup group stage victory at Lennoxtown were inspired by Jack Butland.

The 17-year-old has spent significant time training with the first-team goalkeeping unit over the last 18 months, soaking up every piece of advice from the experience of Jack Butland and Liam Kelly.

Butland boasts an outstanding recent penalty saving record, engineering last season's UEFA Europa League shootout triumph over Fenerbahce just over 12 months ago, and McGuire says he couldn't have asked for a better role model to follow.

Speaking to RangersTV after last night's victory, the Scotland Under-19 international said: "I have actually been with the first-team a lot, and Jack has an unbelievable penalty record, so watching the stuff he does, I try to do.

"I try to be calm when the moment comes, and you're at Rangers for those big moments.

Rangers stuck seven penalties away in the shootout as McGuire thwarted three separate penalties to deliver the bonus point for his side.

It was the second penalty shootout triumph for the young Gers over their rivals in the Glasgow Cup this year after April's success at Firhill in the final of last season's competition.

McGuire said of his emotions: "I'm over the moon. I'm proud of the boys because we were down to the bare bones, but every player, to a man, was excellent defensively.

"We didn't really get the chances that we wanted, the pitch wasn't great, and the ball wasn't sticking, but I tell you what we did the other side of the game to a tee.

"For the boys to see it out fully, and we had some big moments from big players, Jack Wyllie with a clearance off the line, which was extraordinary, and I'm so proud of the boys.

"We done no practice at all, to be honest. We beat them in April in the Glasgow Cup final on penalties, so it must be an ongoing thing.

"I didn't want to take a penalty, so I thought I needed to save a penalty here! It was a fantastic feeling."
