The victory capped off a 100 per cent record in the group phase for the Light Blues, rolling out a much younger squad compared to their previous group outings.
There were still places for Zander Hutton, Findlay Curtis and Paul Nsio, the latter of whom has made his league and European debut over the last ten days, but the chemistry still existed within a fluid Gers display.
Speaking to RangersTV after the victory, Smith commented: “The majority of the game was good.
“The only disappointing thing was that we never managed to see out the clean sheet, but even up to that point and if you watch the recovery run that Paul [Nsio] makes to give up the penalty I couldn’t ask for much more.
“He was obviously tired when he got to the point of contact and we give away the penalty. Apart from that I’m very pleased with the performance.
“There was a mix of experience – although they’re still relatively inexperienced – in terms of how long I have worked with [Curtis, Nsio and Hutton] for.
“I knew the type of characters they were coming into the group, and I know already the group that we have, so it was a good mix today.
“I did expect them to tire towards the end because they haven’t played 90 minutes very often recently, but overall I couldn’t have asked for anymore.”
The goals arrived from Alfie Hutchison twice and a well-taken Aiden McCallion volley midway through the second period.
Both players are yet to turn 17, with Hutchison born in 2009, but neither looked out of place playing above their age.
Smith says he was delighted with the contribution from both and believes they will each benefit from the early exposure to Under-19s football.
He added: “There were some good finishes from Alfie Hutchison and a really good finish from Aiden McCallion.
“[Alfie] gives us options in terms of his ability to play off the sides or through the middle.
“But credit to him because he handled the situation really well and, most importantly, he took the opportunity when the chances presented itself to go and finish.
“Aiden was excellent. Again, it was his first real exposure to that level of football – he’s been in squads prior to today – but even if he didn’t score the goal I still thought he was excellent in his contribution.
“He was really good in possession and effective out of possession, but he was able to top it off with that finish.”
