Tavernier: Rangers Showed Character and Quality

CAPTAIN James Tavernier believes Rangers showed ‘character and quality’ as they progressed in the UEFA Europa League with a 6-4 aggregate victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Tavernier scored both of Rangers goals this evening in a 2-2 draw at Ibrox to book a place in tomorrow’s draw for the last 16 of the competition.

Speaking to RangersTV at full-time, he said: “It is an amazing feeling, not just for myself but for the club and the players. Dortmund really tested us in the first-half but I thought we responded in the second-half.

“The fans were backing us and we showed real character and quality tonight so I am delighted.

“They have got world-class players and we made some tactical changes in the second-half and the application really paid off. Ryan [Kent] and Alfredo [Morelos] held the ball up for us upfront and I was delighted that I could help the boys by getting on the scoresheet.

“If you had told me that I was going to score three goals against Dortmund I would never have believed you that that was going to happen. To get the second one tonight it fell perfect with the volley and the place just erupted and it was an amazing feeling.”

Tavernier says it is now important the squad replicate the same level of performance on Sunday as they welcome Motherwell to Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership.

He continued: “We have to carry this level of performance on to Sunday. We were obviously disappointed at the weekend that we didn't get the points we wanted so we have to come out the blocks firing on Sunday.

“We have to build from this performance, stay grounded and work hard. We will enjoy tonight but the boys will be in for recovery tomorrow and will be training with full focus for Sunday.”
