Here’s everything you need to know about our Hungarian opponents:
THE LOWDOWN
Ferencvaros are currently setting the pace in the Hungarian top-flight and lead ETO Gyor by two points at the top after a 3-0 win over Kisvarda on Sunday.
The side have won six out of their last seven matches in the league, conceding the joint-fewest goals in the division and boasting a flawless record away from home domestically.
In the UEFA Europa League, meanwhile, Ferencvaros sit sixth in the league phase standings and are unbeaten in the competition this campaign.
In fact, they are one of only four sides in the league phase to yet taste defeat, alongside Viktoria Plzen, Freiburg and Real Betis.
Ferencvaros have been supercharged in attack by the goals of Barnabas Varga, who has netted a remarkable 19 times in 26 appearances this season.
After spending much of his career in Austria, the 31-year-old Hungarian joined Ferencvaros in 2023 and has netted over 60 times for the club.
MANAGER – Robbie Keane
No stranger to Scotland, Keane’s first foray into management came in India with ATK after he assumed the role of player-manager following the departure of Teddy Sheringham and Ashley Westwood.
It was a relatively brief role and Keane left the club at the end of 2018, returning to full-time management in 2023 when he was appointed head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv.
He delivered a league title in his only full season at the club, as well as lifting a domestic cup, and reached the last 16 of the Europa Conference League where his side lost out 7-5 on aggregate in extra time to Olympiacos.
Keane joined Ferencvaros in January of this year and helped guide the club to a seventh successive Hungarian league title.
CAPTAIN – Denes Dibusz
Ferencvaros are captained by goalkeeper Denes Dibusz, a Hungarian international who has played over 300 times for the club.
Indeed, his association with the club began all the way back in 2014, where he has developed into a mainstay at both club and international level.
He has missed the last few games through injury, as well as dropping out of the recent Hungarian squad due to the issue.
CLUB LEGEND – Florian Albert
Florian Albert is the biggest legend in Ferencvaros history and remains the only Hungarian player in history to win the Ballon d’Or in 1967.
Albert is nicknamed ‘The Emperor’ and spent 16 years plying his trade for Ferencvaros, which is the only professional team he ever played for.
He made over 350 appearances for the club and scored over 250 goals.
His crowning moment in a Ferencvaros jersey arrived in 1965 when he helped the club lift the Inter-Cities Fair Cup with a win over Juventus in Turin.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
These two clubs squared off against each other in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1960.
Rangers ran out 4-2 winners in the first leg behind a Jimmy Millar double, before the Gers dug in to secure a 5-4 aggregate victory despite Ferencvaros triumphing 2-1 in the return leg.
Those two matches represent Rangers’ only contests against Hungarian teams in European competition.
THE SQUAD
Ferencvaros defender, Stefan Gartenmann, spent a season on loan at Aberdeen in the 2023/24 season.
He played against Rangers three times in that campaign and scored in a 3-1 victory at Ibrox in September 2023.
Winger Daniel Arzani also made a solitary appearance for Celtic in October 2018, on loan from Manchester City, before injury curtailed his season.
In addition, although not directly related to Rangers, midfielder Callum O’Dowda is a Republic of Ireland international and played for Oxford United, Bristol City and Cardiff City before making the move to Hungary.
