Thomson: Competition Is High

MALKY Thomson says competition is high in his squad as they prepare for a trip to Aberdeen in the Scottish Women’s Premier League this weekend.

The Gers head coach has welcomed a number of players back from injury in recent weeks and feels the squad is in a good place ahead of Sunday’s match.

Speaking to RangersTV he said: “I think it will be a very similar challenge to what we have faced in most of the games now. We are finding that most teams now are not just having the one tactic against us, they are sometimes sitting in against us and sometimes they are pressing us high so we prepare for any eventuality.

“We have bodies back in training, numbers are high and they are healthy. We have now had three weeks with the full squad back together barring Kirsten Reilly.

“The competition levels are up and in the last game we saw Rachel McLauchlan, Sam Kerr and Megan Bell all feature and they looked sharp.”

Thomson says the squad have been continuing to work on their relationships on the pitch after another good week in training.

He continued: “This week we have been really strong about knowing the players playing round about us. It is important to know their strengths, weaknesses and be able to identify situations in training where someone might need a bit of cover or where we can utilise their skills.

“When we started our pre-season, you always build from your core and to have a solid framework to build from allows you to play.

“We are fortunate enough that we have enough players that are forward thinking and attack-minded, but ultimately we always ensure that we have a good shape and a good structure in any attack.”
