A first half header from Hannah Davison sent the Light Blues on their way, before Chelsea Cornet doubled her side’s advantage from a corner with just two minutes remaining.
The victory sealed the Gers’ place in a second cup final of the season where they will await either Glasgow City or Celtic on Sunday May 28at the national stadium.
Speaking to RangersTV after the triumph, Thomson expressed his delight at the result: “I’m over the moon. One of our key tasks this year was to retain the title, but to also retain more silverware which we didn’t manage to do last season. We’ve one cup, and if you include the Glasgow Cup then that’s a second cup, and now we’re into a third final.
“I think there was just over 1,000 people here. We’re really grateful to the turnout that the fans gave us. Even after the game, they’re right there until the death and our team went over to celebrate with them at the end. That’s what it’s all about with the fans and the players. It fills my heart.”
Rangers were untroubled from a defensive perspective over the course of the 90 minutes, breaching Motherwell’s rearguard through a pair of excellent headers.
Thomson continued: “Nicola Hardie, our goalkeeping coach, takes charge of corners and free-kicks for and against. It’s something that we’ve implemented into our training, allied to the times when you can head the ball now given the rules and regulations. It’s something that we do work on and you can see that it has paid dividends.
“We’ve come away from worrying too much about when we score the goal. It’s more about making sure we’re in a position where we have the lead, whether it’s scored early or later. The main thing is about continuing to play, dominating the game in terms of possession, and creating opportunities to score. It wasn’t our best performance today, but it’s 2-0 and we’re through to the final.”
