The Light Blues have been searching for their best for ever since they returned from the winter break – but produced a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down with 23 minutes left to defeat Braga 3-2.
Gers now face a trip to St Johnstone before Wednesday’s second leg away in Portugal, and Arfield reckons this has to be the catalyst.
He told this morning’s press conference: “Certainly. There has been a lot made of the form since the winter break but it’s moments like that on big nights – the atmosphere and the noise – it has to kick-start us into something.
“The game that we play, it gets pushed back to our top third and their first third, so it’s difficult to replicate that but in terms of the moments, we need to take some momentum from that.
“I think everyone who watched the game feels a little bit better about themselves and all the players are feeling it too with a bounce in their step this morning.
“Of course, it’s easy to feel good about it, but the bigger picture in terms of this tie, it’s only half-time.
“It came as no surprise how good technically they were, but again, it’s half-time. We got a good result last night but it means nothing if we don’t back it up next week.”
In spite of Gers’ sticky form, Arfield has performed well of late with five goals since the turn of the year.
He continued: “I just try to help the team wherever possible and wherever the manager and the staff want want me to play, I am ready to play for the shirt and ready to play for the boys.
“I think if you ask any player, if you get a run of games in a position you are always playing, then of course, it’s easier.
“But you can’t make those excuses – whenever you are chosen to play in this team, in-terms of the talent we have got, then you are doing something right and you need to be ready to do it as there is someone waiting to take your shirt.”
