The Light Blues gaffer was speaking tonight at the world-class O Dragao Stadium in the beautiful city in the North of Portugal, and while he accepts they are facing a top-class team, he has seen enough to give him confidence.
Gerrard explained: “Taking nothing from the Young Boys game has made the challenge that little bit more difficult.
“What you can get on the road is always a bonus, and I think we deserved to take something from Young Boys but unfortunately we suffered a blow at the end of the game.
“I don’t think many are giving us a chance because of the level of the opposition and the standard of player they have, but within our own group, the staff and the players, we believe we have seen enough that if we play to our maximum, and the players go and bring big individual performances, we can take something from this game.”
Among the array of talent in the Porto squad is Pepe, the former Real Madrid centre-back.
Gerrard was quizzed on the potential tussle between him and red-hot Alfredo Morelos, with the manager continuing: “If Alfredo is selected to play, it will be a fascinating battle, I am sure it will. Pepe has been a world-class player throughout his career and he is really decorated individual.
“I am sure he will be itching to play and start, and I am sure he will be looking forward to testing himself against the best.
“There will be a lot of really intriguing key battles across the pitch, and I am sure all eyes will be on that one.”
The manager also added his support to the earlier club statement. He said: “I think there is nothing better than when we can hear the Rangers supporters in full voice and they are right behind the team.
“We are asking for that same support, and we echo the message the club has put out. It is very important that we behave in the right way as we don’t want to see further punishments down the line.
“We want Ibrox to be rocking and the two remaining home fixtures to be a full house with no sections missing, and we also want our fans to be able to go over to Feyenoord too and enjoy that fixture.”
