Gers were outstanding in the 3-0 defeat of Hearts at Hampden this afternoon – and the margin of victory could well have been higher.
The final will see the Light Blues face Celtic on December 8 – and Gerrard is thrilled with the way his team performed as a whole today to take them there.
Speaking to RangersTV, a delighted Gerrard explained: “I think we thoroughly deserve our place in the final and it will be a tough game when it comes around – of course it will.
“Defensively we were organised and had a great shape about us, and then you could see our quality come through.
“The forward players in the end will get all the headlines, but I was really pleased from back to front with everything about us today – I thought it was a very dominant performance with control.
“It wasn’t easy because we didn’t know what we were coming up against with the change of manager, the change of personnel and all the talk was everywhere else.
“There will be plenty of time to talk and think about this final. Today is about enjoying this occasion – I said to the players don’t play the occasion, play the game.
“It is so easy to be caught up in tickets and Hampden and this, that and the other and all the nonsense that comes with the occasion.
“But you can only enjoy it afterwards when you have your job done – the players can now enjoy it tonight and there is plenty of time to talk about the final.”
After dominating the first half completely, the opening goal arrived in injury time thanks to a super Filip Helander finish following super work from Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos.
“It is a magnificent goal from the second phase of a set-piece,” Gerrard continued. “Ryan obviously caps out and plays a nice ball to Alfredo.
“That topped his performance off as I thought he defended very cleverly today.”
Morelos himself then grabbed a double in the second half to make sure Gers will be back at the National Stadium next month.
They were goals 19 and 20 of a remarkable season for the Colombian, and Gerrard continued: “We are running out of things to say about him as he has been first-class. He worked ever-so hard in pre-season to get himself fit, sharp and in good condition.
Gerrard also paid tribute to the 38,500-plus Rangers fans inside Hampden today, adding: “It is the reason why I have been brought to the club. There was a lot of pressure on my staff and players before the game, but we all stuck together, stayed strong and we delivered a performance together so the fans can now look forward to a final.”
