Game Changers - A Wonderful Goal

Ian Durrant
AS Ian Durrant celebrates his 60th birthday today, the latest episode of Game Changers looks back on one of the Rangers legend’s most memorable goals.

On a huge night for Walter Smith’s side in April 1993, Durrant’s second-half strike against Marseille kept Rangers’ hopes of reaching the Champions League final alive.

The midfielder’s journey back to that stage had been far from straightforward. A serious injury suffered in October 1988 had kept him out of the first team for almost three years, but by the 1992/93 campaign he was once again playing a key role for the Light Blues.

Rangers travelled to the Stade Vélodrome knowing victory over Marseille would secure their place in the Champions League final. The French side, who would go on to lift the trophy that season, provided a formidable test.

Franck Sauzée gave the hosts the lead in the first half, leaving Rangers with work to do after the break but the opportunity fell to Durrant, who struck a superb volley low into the corner to bring Gers level.

The midfielder recalled: “It could have ended up anywhere if I got the wrong connection, but I connected really well and I just saw it going in at the corner.”
