Walter Smith: Five Years On, Forever Remembered

Walter Smith
ON the fifth anniversary of his passing, Rangers remembers with immense affection one of the greatest figures in the club’s history, the legendary Walter Smith.

Five years may have passed since Walter Smith left us, but his presence continues to be felt throughout Ibrox and in the very fabric of the football club.

On October 26, 2021, the Rangers family lost far more than a hugely successful manager. It lost a leader, a gentleman, and a man whose name had become synonymous with the club he loved.

His association with his boyhood club began in 1986, arriving as assistant manager to Graeme Souness and embarking on a journey which would see him become one of the most decorated figures in Scottish football history.

When he assumed the managerial role five years later, Walter ushered in an era of extraordinary domestic dominance, guiding Rangers to nine consecutive league championships and cementing his place among the immortals of Ibrox.

And yet to measure Walter's impact by trophies alone would overlook the very qualities which made him special.

He understood Rangers, its history, traditions, expectations and, most importantly, those who followed the club.

To supporters, he was a reassuring presence, a figure they trusted implicitly to carry the responsibility of leading their club.

His return to Ibrox in January 2007, fresh from reviving the prospects of the Scotland National Team, provided another unforgettable chapter.

During a period when Rangers required stability and a fresh sense of urgency, Walter answered the call at a time of need.

What followed was a period of triumph, including three consecutive league titles, domestic cup success and the memorable journey to the 2008 UEFA Cup Final.

When Walter stepped away from management in 2011, bowing out at Rugby Park with Rangers at the summit of the Scottish game once again, he did so having secured 21 major honours across his two spells in the dugout.

His legacy now has a permanent and fitting home outside Ibrox.

In May 2024, supporters gathered alongside Walter's family, friends and former colleagues for the unveiling of his iconic statue on Edmiston Drive.

Its location, at the Copland Road end of Ibrox, carries particular significance as it was here, as a young boy, Walter stood on the old east terracing watching his Rangers heroes and dreaming of success for the club he adored.

It is a permanent tribute to a man whose contribution will never be forgotten.

But perhaps his greatest legacy is something which could never be captured in bronze.

It is the affection he inspired.

“In all that time you were dealing with a man with great moral compass in how he lived his life and the friendship he offered so many people,” remarked the great Sir Alex Ferguson in 2021.

“He had a wonderful connection with people because he was a great listener; that was one of his greatest qualities. He listened and showed an interest in people and helped everyone he could.”

Walter possessed that rare ability to unite people, command admiration across football's traditional divides, and bring joy to those around him.

Today, we remember not only Walter's remarkable achievements, but the extraordinary individual behind them.

Walter Smith, 1948-2021.
