Hagi admits being the son of a world star who played for Barcelona, Real Madrid and Galatasaray as well as Romania, across three World Cups, brings an undeniable pressure but one which he enjoys. The Romanian international started his senior career at the club his dad founded, Viitorul Constanța, before he moved to Fiorentina in 2016.
Gheorghe played against Rangers three times in his illustrious career, first during the 1997/88 season for Steaua București home and away and then for Galatasaray at Ibrox in 2000/01 UEFA Champions League.
Speaking to RangersTV Hagi smiled:
“Even though I was born with this pressure I got used to it and it really helps me, it gives me the right adrenaline every day and every game just to be better.
“He told me he scored against Rangers! He told me it is a club with great history, great fans and that the fans are incredible. I am looking forward to playing for these colours and especially to meet with the fans.”
Haig was born in Turkey while his father was playing in the country but represents Romania, for who he has ten senior caps to date.
His national team can still qualify for this summer’s Euros throughout the play-off route. Romania play Iceland in the semi-finals and then could face Bulgaria or Hungary in the finals on March 31st.
The 21-year-old said: “After the Euro Under 21s we had in the summer it was a big step making the move up to senior team. I have played ten times for them now and now it is just great.
“I am looking forward to the game in March, it is really important for our country to qualify – I am confident we can.”
