Kathy Hill Praises Cornet Comeback Goal

DELIGHTED Kathy Hill has led the praise for Chelsea Cornet’s comeback goal which won this afternoon’s Old Firm derby at New Douglas Park.

Cornet, making her first outing in three months from the bench, nabbed a stunning clincher to ensure Gers edged a fantastic match 3-2.

Speaking to RangersTV afterwards, Hill beamed: "It had everything, but the main thing was that we came out in the end with a win. There are so many things we can talk about, but Chelsea's goal, after coming on having been out for so long, we have missed her and her finish was unbelievable.

"You can talk about the character of the team to come back too. We have led twice in the game and gave them opportunities to draw level, but thankfully we kept pushing for that winner, and it was a great win in the end.

"It is the same every time we play them, we know it is going to be a tight game. Both teams want to win, both teams are going to have chances, but we have pushed on to get the winner today which was the main thing.

"We have such a strong squad this year. Looking at the bench, if people are getting tired, you have quality coming on and Chelsea with her first game back, she'll need to build up her minutes, but it wasn't a bad 40 minutes from her today."

Cornet’s goal was the odd one in five to hand the Light Blues the victory, and was the third time they had led on the day.

Hill revealed some stern words were had following the strike to ensure the lead was held onto, with goalkeeper Jenna Fife producing a stunning late save to clinch the all-important three points.

She continued: "Jenna has made a top save near the end, and their keeper it felt like she was having a 'worldy' today as well. It was important for everyone to step up and defend well in the latter stages.

"After we got the winner, we had a quick conversation and said there were no more goals coming in, so I'm just glad we saw it over the line."

Beating the other half of the Old Firm is always great at any level of the club, but Hill knows they must refocus and keep their form going when they host Dundee United next Sunday in the SWPL.

The defender added: "I'm sure Jo will be drilling it into us this week how important that is. These results are great, but it is also the work you do away from these games so we will be back in on Tuesday putting in the same preparation we did for this week for next week."
