Two first half goals from Zak Lovelace set the Light Blues on their way, putting them 2-0 up at the break before Greig Allen added a third just after the restart with a close-range volley. Zander Hutton rounded off the scoring with a fantastic individual strike in what was an impressive performance from the young Gers on the night.
Cameron Campbell named four changes to his Rangers side for the clash with Motherwell, with Greig Allen, Jamie Newton, Bailey Rice and Zak Lovelace coming into the team. They replaced Cameron Scott, Leyton Grant, Kerr Robertson and Kieron Willox in the starting lineup.
After a scrappy opening four minutes at the Training Centre, it was the hosts that found themselves in front. Zak Lovelace got on the end of a long ball over the top and, using his pace to his advantage, he burst beyond the last defender in Zack Flatman and fired a fierce low, left-footed effort across goal as it found the far corner.
Motherwell looked for a quick response as Olly White got in down the left side and delivered a dangerous cross into the area, but there were no takers in the box as the visitors looked for an equaliser to level up the tie on the night.
Lovelace was causing all sorts of problems for the ‘Well defence with his close control and pace, continuously getting into dangerous positions in the final third as he looked the most likely to contribute further to the hosts’ lead.
It was that man again who got in behind in similar fashion to his goal after a high through ball from Jamie Newton in the left-back area. Getting to the ball first after looking second best initially, he fired a shot again with his left foot but was denied this time by Kyle Aitken in the Motherwell goal with his feet.
Campbell Forrest had an opportunity inside the penalty area to level up the contest after winning the ball high just outside the Rangers penalty area. Shifting the ball onto his right-side, he fired a shot goalwards but Jacob Pazikas seen it wide of his post and behind.
Rangers doubled their advantage with six minutes to go until half time. Right-back Zander Hutton reaped the rewards for pressing high as he won the ball inside the opposition penalty area and, recognising his striker was much better placed, he cut the ball back to Lovelace who fired home from close range to add his second of the evening.
Hutton again found himself in a promising position down the right flank as he got the better of the Well left-back Scott Williamson, but he saw his cross to the far post diverted behind in what was the last of the action in a controlled opening 45 minutes for the hosts.
Both sides failed to keep safe possession for a five-minute spell after the restart as Rangers continued to defend their penalty box well and limit the visitors to very little. At the other end, Findlay Curtis found himself in space at the edge of the area but dragged his right-footed shot wide in the first action of the second half.
In the next phase of play Rangers made it three. Bailey Rice’s corner kick delivery was met by Kristian Webster at the front post; the centre back’s flick was met by Greig Allen on the volley who smashed the ball home from close range to put the Gers in complete control of the tie.
The Light Blues were now enjoying most of the play and still limiting Motherwell to very little midway through the second half as they looked to keep their clean sheet intact.
Zander Hutton added a fourth with a superb individual effort as he advanced down the right-side, carrying the ball 20 yards and striking a high shot which found the far corner, leaving the Motherwell keeper with little chance in what was a brilliant moment for the right-back.
The hosts went on to see the game out comfortably to book their place in the semi-finals in what was a commanding display overall.
