A PROUD Malky Thomson has shared his delight as Rangers progressed to Round 2 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League with a 4-0 victory over Greek champions PAOK.
As debutants in the competition, it has been a fantastic few days for the Light Blues as victories over Ferencvaros and PAOK ensured they will continue their European journey next month.
Speaking to RangersTV at full-time, Thomson said: “I am absolutely ecstatic, the hard work and effort the guys have put in has paid off and you can see it.
“When something is new it has excitement to it so we are always on about the positivity and if something is new embrace it and learn about it as you go along. I am delighted in a sense that the group is such a diverse group, we have young kids at 16-years of age there playing Champions League football it is certainly new to me.
“They are not even phased by it, there's not even a worry about it. I have been involved in football a long time and so has Craig McPherson and Kevin Murphy and we have spoke about it endless times that they don't seem to be phased by it.
“I think that is good and that is down to the environment that is created by the rest of the team and the girls but it’s massive pride that I feel just now and we are looking forward to seeing who we draw in the next stage.”
Looking back at the 90 minutes against PAOK this afternoon, Thomson was was pleased with how his sqaud stayed patient and stuck to their game plan.
He continued: “I think it was a game where in the first half it was extremely hot, they were well disciplined and hard to break down but I think the fitness levels in our team and plus the fact we stuck to the plan we were able to grind them down.
"There's a real maturity about them now and they are starting to become aware of whether we score in the first minute or whether we score in the last. It is irrelevant, it is about winning.
“As a group, it is a collective the staff and the players what they have done has been monumental and it certainly feels that way.”
