ZEBEDEE Lawson says his brace in Rangers Under-19s’ league title decider capped off an exciting debut campaign in the youth ranks.
The Englishman joined the club from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer and made his first-team debut in January’s Scottish Cup victory at Ibrox.
He has been a mainstay in the Under-19s side, popping up with several big goals throughout a memorable campaign.
But none more so than the brace he grabbed in the 2-1 victory over St. Mirren, with the quality of the goals underlined by the fact that both kissed the woodwork on their way into the back of the net.
Speaking to RangersTV after lifting the league trophy, the delighted teenager commented: “I couldn’t have dreamt of a better first season. I can’t put it into words.
“The stuff that I’ve shown on the pitch has opened up so many opportunities for me: the debut for the first-team, my Under-19s debut too, and also today scoring the two goals.”
Matches can often be decided by individual moments, and Lawson certainly produced two of the highest quality with so much at stake in the league decider.
His first-half strike drew Rangers level immediately after falling behind, firing in off the underside of the crossbar from 25 yards out.
His second, meanwhile, was quite sensational as he stepped forward and curled home a free-kick right on the edge of the penalty area.
Lawson added: “It was an amazing moment. One of the best that I’ve felt this season. The way we did it, with the last-minute winner, is just spectacular.
“My first goal? We needed the momentum because they had just scored. I just got the ball; it was still far out, but I knew I had the quality, and I thought, ‘let’s shoot and see what happens,’ and it went in.
“In the last minute, I don’t think I’ve ever felt my heart racing like it was. Myself and Kyle Glasgow were speaking about where I was going to put it, and I’ve seen that the goalkeeper was a little more to the left.
“I’ve hit it top bins, and as soon as it hit the post before it went in, I’m already running to the corner celebrating.”
